The Battery Explosion

Just in case you have a maintenance free battery 5 years or older, you might think about replacing it before it explodes.  One SC's exploded when the key was turned to start the car recently, and sent acid and battery plastic all over the place.  It took 2 boxes of baking soda and a whole lot of water to clean up the battery area.  While this was an opportunity to clean up the battery floor area and paint it with rust encapsulating paint from Eastwood and add several layers of rubberized undercoating, it is recommended you replace a maintenance free battery as it nears its 5 year service life with one you can check the cell fluid levels in.

The explosion was a result of excess hydrogen gas produced perhaps by a faulty battery maintainer that was overcharging the battery and boiling off the water.  Additionally, as batteries age, their vents don't function perfectly -- non-vented gas and a spark from a call for cranking amps can equal ka-boom!  So check your battery maintainer as well as replacing your old maintenance-free battery when it gets up in years -- the combination may be bad news waiting to happen.

911SC Register Keeper

We are in the process of changing over the 911SC Register Keeper to a new PCA member (Tom Westfall).  Stay tuned for the announcement and the changes he will be making in the Register/Website.
